No.5 Boys' House
Tom Newman and his wife Jennie moved in to No.5 in September 2007 with their two children, Toby aged two and Freya who is one year old. It is very much Tom’s philosophy to make every boy in the House feel valued and confident in his ability. He encourages everyone to work hard, play hard and to pull together as a team. Tom is a very keen sportsman who believes that the wealth of extra-curricular opportunities offered by the College will create a busy, happy and well- balanced individual. He and Jennie put great emphasis on creating an extended family of boys in No.5 by organising events and social activities for all year groups. Tom also likes to keep in regular contact with boys’ parents which he feels is essential to offering a high level of care for each boy.

House News
Ferrets Race
All the FY in No.5 competed in this race and they ran it well. Particular congratulations go to Jonathan Betteridge who came third at the finish and therefore second in the Individual competition. In the Team competition, the first six in a house to cross the finishing line count and the higher placed they are the lower the points scored. The No.5 team had the lowest points score and won the team competition for their house. This means that No.5 keep the Ferret Race Trophy for another year.
Junior Rugby
Inter-house rugby finals are always hard fought. This was no exception and No.5 were through to play No.7 in the final on the 6th December. Both teams were utterly determined to win and it was a very close match. The No.5 team kept its composure throughout, engaging enthusiastically in line-out and scrum, quick on the attack and strong in defence. No.7 led for a brief interval in the second half but No.5 hung on fiercely until a final try and conversion in the last minutes of the game brought victory. A roar from spectators, both boys and parents, confirmed the team’s 17-15 victory.
Social events
Students in No.5 study hard and play hard on the sports field, but they also enjoy a bit of relaxation. In the Autumn term Tom and Jennie Newman invited the juniors to a series of Pizza nights and at the end of term the annual House Christmas Supper was a resounding success. The Sixth formers were invited to a dinner party organised by the Housemaster and the boarders will go bowling at the beginning of next term. Also, there is the much anticipated trip to Alton Towers which takes place at the beginning of next term. As soon as the weather gets warmer Tom and Jennie will organise some barbeques in the garden.
Social Evenings for Parents
We have been delighted to welcome parents to the House on several occasions this term and last. It is a good opportunity for us all to get together and for parents to meet each other. ‘Friends of Five’ continues to be a big occasion every term. This is an evening where parents and their friends can come to the House for a three course meal. We have a visiting speaker and there is plenty of opportunity to chat to each other and make new friends. This term’s speaker is the very Rev’d Colin Semper, ex-Dean of Westminster Abbey. Please ask Tom or Jennie for details if you would like to come. 01684 581565
Stop press … food!
Our chef and kitchen team have been awarded the best food on campus award after a great term toiling in the No,5 kitchen. The award comes as no surprise to us but we are very pleased to have it formally acknowledged that the food in No.5 is really superb both at formal functions and every single day. Congratulations Annie and her fantastic team, where would we be without you?
