No.6 Girls' House

Nichola Cage has recently arrived at the College to take up the role of Housemistress of No.6.  Married to Mark, they have three children James aged nine and Charlotte aged seven and Sophie who was born on 9th May 2008. James and Charlotte are both at Malvern College Preparatory School. The family also has a mad Springer spaniel called ‘Bailey’ whose life ambition seems to be to meet as many of the girls in the house as he possibly can!  Nichola enjoys boarding-house life enormously and strongly believes in the ethos, ‘try your best, but most of all enjoy what there is to offer’.   In the past Nichola has been a member of the CCF, learnt to shoot and become a shooting coach, learnt to ski, taken up playing the flute, stage-managed plays, taken school trips to many countries, and sung in a number of choral performances – as well as teaching Geography!

No 6 “hits back”

By Mona Niermann

After some quite unsuccessful times in the inter-house sports competitions, No 6 is now on its way to fight for the champions’ position again. What started off with an unlucky fourth spot in the girls’ house cricket developed into two second places in both house rounders and house tennis for the seniors. In the latter we were only beaten into the runner-up position by one solitary game!

House cricket was played just before half term under the burning sun, but unfortunately No 6 could not squeeze out a top performance, competing against the other strong (and much more experienced) girls’ houses. Nevertheless, we held our ground considering that one person in the team never even had watched cricket before let alone played it herself! But the girls worked together passionately and consequently it was a lot of fun.

The next house sport was rounders on the Wednesday after Half term holidays. With most of the seniors busy with exams, the No 6 girls gathered a younger team together and came an amazing second place, even though we only had eight players in the team instead of the normal nine plus reserves. After a brief introduction by our captain, Charlie, the No 6 girls ran for their lives to try and get as many rounders or half-rounders as possible. This effort was rewarded with the second place and later on in the evening with pizza and chocolate (courtesy of Mr Dain) which was a great end to the day.

Last but not least, in the inter house competitions came house tennis, where the senior girls achieved a great second and the juniors a third place. As with the previous games, the sun was shining again for the sporty girls of No 6 and this, as well as the house spirit, resulted in an afternoon full of fun.

These great results will probably give a new breeze of house spirit for the sports events, following from No 6’s house motto “WE CAN DO IT”.

Beyond the sporting arena/pitch/court, more fun has been had with our now traditional house BBQ.  Sadly, it pitched down with rain, so the barbecue, although smoking hot, had to be abandoned and we retreated inside for an evening of magnificent food and chat.  Several teachers joined us and we celebrated Vivian’s birthday with chocolate cake, and then had a girls’ night in watching a DVD.

A special mention goes to Jocelyn Smith and Helen Pratt who have been representing the school in an Engineering Education Scheme, working with a team on a magnetic levitation project for Qinetic.  More about that in a separate bulletin.

Next week, these two girls will be joined by several others from the house on a trip to Oxford prior to their applications this coming September.  Good luck, girls!

The Autumn Term in Number 6

by Pia Petzinka

This first term has already been a really exciting term. Many new girls joined our community in Number 6 this year, bringing a variety of languages and cultures together.

The first event which we enjoyed together as a house was the Rambert ballet in Malvern Theatres. The ballet was a combination of different modern dances, and we all agreed that the pas de deux was the most impressive piece. The evening was great fun and it was fascinating to see how ballet and modern dance with colour imagery can be combined.

Zeze and Lizzie did overall an amazing job when they debated for the house. This was proven when they won the debating trophy of the year. Very well done to them!

The inter-house lacrosse matches took place at the end of November. Although key players were missing, the team gave their best and showed great house spirit against the other three houses.

The absolute best event this term was the Clothes Show in Birmingham. We left early in the morning in order to make the most of spending time (and money!) there. A dream for all of us girls came true… Shopping all day!! After browsing and spending money in the different shops, the day ended with an amazing Catwalk Show sponsored by NOKIA, where boys and girls about our age gave a great performance wearing amazing outfits from beachwear to motorbike kit!

Finally, there is music. The girls in Number 6 have been involved in music all the way through the term from the informal concert through the choir and the Advent Carol Service at Tewkesbury Abbey to the Christmas Concert, a spectacular concert with many of our house performing. The small chamber orchestra featured Pia and Camilla on the violin, Joss on the viola and Helen on the double bass. The quality of music and musicianship was outstanding. Pia, Camilla and Joss also spent two days away rehearsing and playing with the Welsh National Opera, an opportunity that was greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to all those who won Commendations from the Music Department for their commitment to music this term. Whether you are a beginner on the drums or beyond grade 8, we are proud of you!

We have just welcomed Zeze, Reene and Rachael back into the House. They hae spent three days in Oxford for their university admissions interviews and met up there with ex-Number 6 Millie Hunter. All three have had a good time and we hope all their efforts are rewarded with offers.

Overall, it has been a really busy but also exciting term in the House. Basically, it was, how it always is: FUN!
