Academic Overview

Malvern College has a strong academic tradition going back almost 150 years. Whilst maintaining trusted values we have a reputation for being at the forefront of educational developments. We were the first school to have a language laboratory for pupils, we developed the world renowned Nuffield science and also initiated the Key Skills course now used in over a thousand schools in the UK. In 1992 we maintained our innovative approach by introducing the International Baccalaureate (IB) as an alternative academic qualification. Over the last ten years we have offered both A levels and the IB and currently our Sixth form pupils are evenly divided between the two. Recently we achieved another first by becoming the only secondary school in Britain to be accredited with the authority to offer the pre-university Art Foundation Course. Our highly qualified academic staff encourage a scholarly approach in our pupils. The return is a splendid set of examination results and admission to highly regarded universities. A personal mentor guides our pupils in their choice of university and course.

2007 – An excellent year for Malvern College A levels and IB

Malvern College pupils achieved a 99.5% pass-rate in their 2007 A level examinations. No less than 70% were assessed at Grade A or B, the College’s best ever result. This follows on from the College’s second best ever International Baccalaureate results in July, with candidates scoring an average 35.8 points. Combining both A level and IB results, the Times newspaper ranked Malvern College the 5th best co-educational independent school. Having a choice between A levels and the IB in the Sixth Form works to the advantage of pupils who are able to play to their strengths.

Pre-Sixth Form Course

Malvern College offers a one year, Pre-Sixth Form course designed specifically for students who are not native speakers of English. There are two programmes available:

Either, the One Year (I)GCSE Programme
Or,  the One Year Intensive English & Academic Programme

One Year (I)GCSE Programme
This programme is intended for pupils whose entrance tests, academic background and standard of English indicate that they are capable of completing the individual specifications in one year and making a success of the Public Examinations.

Intensive English and Academic Programme
This programme is intended for students who have the potential to successfully complete a Sixth Form course but whose current level of English means that they would find the intensive nature of the One Year (I)GCSE programme very challenging.

It is important to emphasise that students from both programmes have an equal opportunity to gain entry into the Sixth Form to study either a GCE Advanced Level course or the International Baccalaureate. However, entry into the Pre-Sixth Form does not guarantee a place in the Sixth Form.

A table that outlines the subjects studied in each programme and the Public Examinations available is in pdf format
