Robert joined the Army after university at Bristol where he read Politics and has served in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. "The Army gives you a lot of opportunity to travel" he said.  Indeed, he met his wife Line when they were both posted to a NATO conference in Maastricht.
He said that working with civilians in occupied territories brought him into contact with all sorts of people from Chiefs to local warlords, from doctors to the illiterate and poor. "The most important people are interpretors but there are many other jobs to offer as well.  Most of the people we see are pleased to see us, but of course we are offering them employment.  There are others who are not so pleased at our presence and everyone who has served in Iraq knows of someone who has been killed or injured there" he said.
