Jane Brierly (No. 4) and Addy Lawson (No. 3) represented England and Wales respectively in the U/19 Junior Lacrosse Home Internationals tournament on Sunday March 16 at Moreton Hall in Shropshire. Playing for the B teams, both sides went on to win against Scotland, but Wales then lost out to England.
Addy Lawson said: “When I was first invited to attend the Welsh Lacrosse trials I didn’t expect to get this far. I have played in Home Internationals for the U/22 and the U/19 Welsh sides and in those matches I played with and against some of the best players of our age in the UK. This experience of playing lacrosse at an international level has given me a different perspective on the sport and an amazing opportunity to be part of a very talented and friendly team.”
Following the Junior match, Jane was invited to play for England’s Senior C Squad in Cardiff last weekend (Sunday 20 April) at the Senior Lacrosse Home Internationals. The C squad stepped in when Scotland’s B team had to pull out, leading to the curious spectacle of two England teams playing one another. The C-team performed well, but was no match for the stronger B team and was beaten 17-3.
Jane said of the experience: “I felt very proud stepping out onto the pitch and was honoured to have been selected for the senior team. It was hard playing with older players, but good to see what I can aspire to. I’m very grateful to my former teachers who helped with my coaching and believed in me – it has got me where I am today and I’m very thankful for that.”
The 17-year-old outgoing Senior Chapel Prefect hopes to resume playing lacrosse at a senior level when she returns from Australia. She is taking a gap year when she will coach lacrosse at a boarding school in Adelaide.
