Peter Hadley recently became the first member of the current Upper VIth to raise to Gold level in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Showing his characteristic level of commitment Peter has pursued his goal through Bronze and Silver levels to the Gold Award of which he is understandably proud. He can now look forward to receiving his certificate from the Duke of Edinburgh at either Buckingham Palace or St. James’s Palace in about six months time.
When asked about what part of the scheme he had most enjoyed Peter replied “the Expeditions sections, not only because they were challenging but because of the group dynamics that were involved. I enjoyed being with a group of friends who helped each other through the more difficult times with great humour".
Peter’s Expeditions sections involved a Practice in the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains during April 2003 and the Qualifier on Dartmoor in July. He had experienced appalling wet and cold weather for the Expedition section of his Silver Award so was grateful for the fine weather he experienced on both occasions this year. He also enjoyed similar excellent conditions in August when his six day Residential Experience took him to Coverack in Cornwall. There he specifically took part in a RYA Winsurfing Course, in a group of some thirty other enthusiasts.
For his Skill section Peter learned to drive and having passed his driving test at the first attempt he has continued to have instruction to improve his driving through something called ‘Pass Plus’. This involves driving in wet weather, at night and on motorways. Peter carried out his Physical Section by playing Rackets for the College’s second pair and his Service activity as a member of the Marines section of the CCF.
Peter was asked why he wished to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and what he feels he has got out of it. He says, “To be honest some of the activities I would have been doing anyway, but I particularly wanted to take part in the expeditions and to aim for such a respected award. It has certainly given focus to my Co-Curricular activities over the last three years. I have enjoyed pushing myself and learning the importance of teamwork. I am also aware that my university application has been strengthened by evidence of my showing commitment to the Award Scheme and following it through to the end”.
