James Radford (1) won the Sir Michael Spicer Debating Cup for delivering the best speech in this year's inter-school Eyres-Monsell Debating Competition. He was awarded the cup at the Chase High School by local MP, Sir Michael Spicer, and by the other two judges of the competition: Michael Brinton, Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, and Councillor Ralph Madden, the Chairman of Malvern Town Council. Everyone present agreed that James delivered an absolutely superb speech in which, with all the artistry of a brain surgeon, he stitched up the opposition.
James's prize is not just the cup but also a trip to the House of Commons to see Prime Minister's Question Time and have lunch with Sir Michael. "He thoroughly deserves it, " said Peter Chappell, Master in charge of Debating, "but what impressed me most was the quality of both teams we entered in this year's competition. James's partner, Mikey Wilks (1), deserved an award himself for his masterly performance and our other team, Alex Glaister and Jamie Michelson, also put on a deft display in the art of debating. There is strength in depth in debating at Malvern. Alex won the competition last year and his partner, Jamie, new to the sixth form, spoke with impressive confidence and clarity given his relative lack of experience."
