A level and IB Results in French, German and Spanish at GCSE are routinely outstanding, with typically 70 - 80% of pupils scoring A or A*. In September 2007, Italian GCSE was added to the choice of modern languages.
Foreign Languages at Malvern are taught in a vibrant department. In addition to French to GCSE in the lower school, pupils can also study German, Italian or Spanish. In the Sixth Form on offer are French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Cantonese. We have also provided tuition in Norwegian, Swedish, Urdu, Mandarin and Gujurati. Almost three quarters of the Sixth Form study at least one modern foreign language. At A level, over 80% of pupils have scored grade C or above in the last ten years. In the IB, over 90% of pupils have scored one of the top three grades since its introduction in 1992.
The Modern Languages department at Malvern College is responsible for maintaining one of the largest web-portals for language learning in the world. Set up by Paul Godsland, the Head of Department, as part of the HMC/GSA internet initiative, the portal offers some three thousand websites in five languages for Sixth form students. The portal is currently supported by Channel 4, WH Smith and Dorling Kindersley.
All pupils in the Foundation Year (Year 9) go to France to visit the WW1 battlefields and memorials; about half of the Remove year (Year 10) go to France to visit the WW2 battlefields and memorials. Others go to Germany or Spain. In the Lower Sixth, students of French are offered the opportunity to do work-experience in Saint Malo. There are also regular study visits to Italy.
