Music at Malvern
 |
Malvern College aims to provide musical opportunities for all its pupils, from high-level performers preparing for a career in music to enthusiasts who want to enjoy some regular music-making. In the FY (Year 9) all pupils follow a short course in music. Talent is spotted and encouraged.
The school choir is for pupils of all ages. In addition to performing in the school they display their quality in a number of prestigious venues. As a discipline music is available to GCSE and in the Sixth Form.
The Music School is housed in a large Victorian building and includes three large rehearsal/class rooms, music technology room, percussion room, recording studio, library and numerous large practice/teaching rooms. Attached to the Music School is St Edmund’s Hall, a 150 seat recital hall with a fine Steinway piano.
Major concerts are performed in the main school building where there is seating for 400. There is a three-manual Willis organ in the School Chapel.
The Director of Music is supported by three full-time staff, Head of Academic Music, Head of Instrumental Music and College Organist, who are also Head of Strings, Woodwind and Keyboard respectively. There are at present 20 visiting teachers who, along with the full-time staff, offer specialist teaching in all traditional orchestral instruments as well as voice, organ, jazz piano, drum kit, bagpipes, recorder and classical, bass and electric guitar.
