Debating Success
Two debating teams representing the school took part in a preliminary round of the Taylor Trophy Inter-School Junior Debating Competition recently - and both won through to the next round. A double victory like this is a notable achievement, especially since it was their first experience of inter-school debating for all four of our debaters. From the Hundred, Henry Wootton & Sophia Godsland had the difficult task of proposing "This House believes in Yesterday". From the Remove, Hannah Campbell and Laura Joyce had the task of opposing the motion "This House Don't Need No Education".

Educational Visit to Namibia - Summer 2007
Malvern College’s expedition to Namibia in July 2007 will build upon the great success of the Christmas 2004 trip to China and will be the first time the school has organised an educational visit to the continent of Africa. This expedition will be an exciting joint venture between the Biology and Geography departments and as such will involve staff from both subject areas who will bring their expertise in their individual fields to look at different aspects of the environment, wildlife and people of Namibia.

The proposed trip will include two days travelling and ten days exploring Namibia. The trip will take in the splendidly surreal terrain of Namibia’s vast open spaces which possess a haunting beauty unique to southern Africa. It is intended that the visit will include the arid coastal desert region to see how it contrasts with the lush, verdant vegetation of the Caprivi area in the northeast. Although not directly linked to any specific aspects of either the Geography or Biology syllabuses, the trip will allow students the opportunity to use their experiences in Namibia to gain a broader understanding of environmental, human and conservation issues in Africa.

Duke of Edinburgh - Gold Awards Presentation
The Gold Award Recipients
Eleven O.M.s travelled from various corners of the country, and from abroad, to attend the presentation of their Gold Awards at St.James’ Palace. Young people from schools and colleges all over the Midlands arrived to the sound of stirring melodies played by the band of the Irish Guards. Together with their parents they gathered in the Queen Anne room and, amid the magnificent splendour of this beautiful State Room, they were received by the Duke of Edinburgh. Later, their awards were presented to them in person by the Olympic-Gold-Medal-winning sprinter Linford Christie.
The sense of occasion was tangible and the events of the morning both reflected and rewarded the effort that each of these individuals had maintained in completing the multi-faceted challenge that the Gold Award represents.

OM’s receiving the award included Sophie Weir, Sneha Varkey, Kathryn Bath, Claire Eglington, Helen Oxley, Thomas Davies, Thomas Davenhill, Matt Swarbrick, David Thompson, David Ponting and James O’Meegan.

Carnegie Medal Winner visits the FY

Tim Bowler with pupils from the FY
The Library and English Department, together with the Foundation year students, were delighted to welcome acclaimed teenage author Tim Bowler to the school.

Tim gave an energetic and inspiring presentation to the whole of the Foundation Year on his novels and how he writes them. This was followed by a book-signing session and a brief discussion on creative writing techniques to selected pupils from each English set. Tim is a charismatic speaker and swiftly engaged his audience. He maintains that writing is a difficult and lengthy business and he stressed the importance not just of creativity but also critical appraisal. He encouraged the many pupils who expressed an interest in writing to persevere, to rewrite as necessary and not to be afraid of rejecting any material that does not work.

Tim grabbed the attention of the publishing world when he won the prestigious Carnegie Medal for his third novel, ‘River Boy’. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, winning both the Angus Book Award and the Lancashire Libraries Children’s Book Award for his fourth novel, ‘Shadows’. He has also won the South Lanarkshire Book Award with his fifth novel, ‘Storm Catchers’. Tim’s writing is beautifully lyrical, yet he is also able to create tense, action-packed thrillers.

CCF visit to Snowdonia
Education of the whole person takes many forms at Malvern and through a range of opportunities. One such opportunity is by way of particpation in the CCF and over the second leave-out of term a small group completed the annual trip to Snowdonia. They were blessed with two days of glorious weather enabling them to achieve several of the most rewarding routes in the National Park.

On the Saturday the cadets were spilt into small groups depending on ability and experience and walked in the region of Llyn Ogwen. The Sunday saw assaults made on Snowdon and surrounding mountains from a variety of directions and routes. The tasks varied in difficulty according to the experience and skills of the pupils but all groups achieved their goals.

College pupil given rare honour
Jack Lister, House No.1
Each year the organising authority for the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall nominate one Contingent from the Combined Cadet Forces in Great Britain to provide a cadet to act as the CCF Banner Bearer. This year Malvern College CCF was fortunate in being chosen and the honour of carrying the banner was given to Cdt CSgt Jack Lister (No.1) who is the senior cadet in the Royal Marines section.

In Jack’s own words, “To be selected to carry the CCF Banner was a great honour and privilege for me. Taking part in the Festival of Remembrance was a humbling experience and something I will never forget.”

Headmaster’s Remembrance Day Address

Old Malvernians and friends of Malvern College joined the pupils and staff at the school for the Act of Remembrance on Sunday November 13th. Blessed with a sunny bright morning which was none the less rather cold, the pupils lined up on the terrace and the visitors gathered in the area around the war memorial. Following the poignant ceremony the large number moved into Chapel where the sermon was given by the headmaster, Hugh Carson. On the pews in Chapel were placed wooden crosses, each with a name of a former pupil who had been killed in either of the two world wars. After the service, pupils and visitors were invited to plant a cross in the designated area of ground. For the full text of the headmaster’s sermon click on Full Story.
