The Prep School has had a wonderful year of artwork. Every person has worked their hardest and achieved outstanding work. This year, there were many very talented artists, particularly in Year 8. Georgia reviews the end-of-year art exhibition, June/ July 2005.

Gabriela Dain’s work was varied and eye catching. Her self-portrait was fantastic, using an A1 piece of paper. To transfer work onto that size would take a lot of time and concentration. Another wonderful piece of work was her drawing of a rose. It was terribly detailed and showed her passionate side. It was beautiful and everyone who came to the exhibition adored it.

Peem shows off some of his self-portraits
I was especially impressed with Poom and Peem’s self-portraits. I know how difficult it is to draw faces using paint. It is very difficult to create a likeness. There were many drawings and paintings by Poom and Peem, all of which were finely detailed and effective, also using different media.

Arslan’s sketches of 'The Raft of the Medusa' by Gericault, I thought, was a wonderful drawing showing atmosphere and drama. He was especially interested in the shapes of the bodies and their positions. He was very perceptive in his work.

3D project by Year 4
The Year 7 pupils had an interesting and enjoyable three terms this year. At the start of the year, we were looking at shapes, textures and relief in groups. We built large life size robots, made from cardboard and found materials. I think that this was the highlight of the year. Once we had built our robots we spray painted them with metallic colours. They looked fantastic after that. In the final term of the year we visited Diglis Docks in Worcester and drew objects and places there. Harriet Munro-Turner’s paintings were very detailed and have an excellent sense of reality. She created a second painting based on her first painting but abstract.

Landscapes by Year 5
Year 6 created wire people showing movement. They then put Mod-roc over the top. They looked great, especially Diego Perez’s.

Group project
Victoria James, in Year 5, series on animals was very imaginative and finely detailed also. I loved her work. Year 5 also drew bottles and created a series of still lives using different types of media.

Year 4 created historical portraits which were very vivid for their age. I thought that the way the frames were arranged was very clever.

The younger pupils in Year 3 at Hillstone are doing excellently for their age. Their paintings of fields, silver shields and collages just go to show that no matter how young you are you can still create a memorable piece of work.

Art prize certificates were awarded this year to:
