Art Music Drama: Art
Art lessons and art clubs at Malvern College Preparatory School are designed to provide pupils with a broad range of creative opportunities.
A newly-developed art facility caters for drawing, painting. printing, textiles and 3D making activities and is conveniently sited to allow easy access at breaktimes for those wishing to continue with their artwork. The art room is well stocked with art books, art equipment, a computer, projector, and various art gallery CDROMs.
Pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 have two double art lessons per week, reducing to one double lesson (an hour and ten minutes) in Years 6, 7 and 8.
Art projects are designed with progression in mind and provide pupils with a range of creative experiences in different media, both two and three dimensional. Connections, through techniques and examples of work, to famous artists and designers provide a context for many projects, linking in with National Curriculum guidelines..
Art trips are an important aspect of the children's art experience at the Prep School with annual visits made to regional and national galleries. When opportunities arise, visiting artists and craftspeople are invited to run workshops. These have, in recent years, introduced the children to stonecarving, weaving with willow, puppet-making and plate-painting.
All children have a sketchbook and their work is stored in a portfolio. There are opportunities for art awards in Year 6 (11+) and Year 8 (13+ entry to senior schools).
There are strong cross-curricular links with the music and drama departments, especially in set building and costume design.
Well-motivated pupils displaying promise in the subject are prepared for art scholarships to senior schools in Year 8. Art awards to Malvern College Preparatory School are made in Year 6.
