Mme Stéphanie Ingram reports:
What a week we have had! Our counterparts are back in France and had a very smooth trip back on the ferry. They could not believe how nice the weather can be in England!
The French students arrived at Malvern Prep School on time on Monday 3rd March, where our pupils were waiting impatiently for them. They received a warm welcome back from the English correspondents, who were so excited to meet their pen-friends again. The afternoon was spent visiting our school finishing by the Library, where everyone was invited to have some refreshments and a piece of the 'welcome to England' cake, made especially for the occasion. Each pupil then spent the evening with their counterparts.
During the week, the English students visited Worcester and its cathedral as well as the Worcester porcelain works and museum, where they painted their own plates to take back home with them. They also went on a tour of the Cadbury factory, visited Ledbury, experienced a walk on the Malvern Hills and shopping in England! Mr Tim Riley organised a games afternoon on Wednesday, where the English students learnt how to play quick cricket and a game of rounders. The atmosphere was friendly but competitive, finishing with a 'balle au camp' - a typical French ball game. The boarders were able to have their own correspondents in the boarding house with them and a variety of activities were put in place to entertain their French friends, from going to the Fish and Chips shop to a talent show! We finished the week by sharing a 'bowling experience' together, where everyone had a very exciting time.
Well done to our Year 8 pupils, who were a credit to our school, as they tried their best to look after their correspondents. They behaved impeccably throughout the week and were a joy to have around. They were polite and thoughtful towards the French pupils and their teachers, and remained focused when the French pupils went on their days out. I was delighted to see how mature and dedicated they were.
May I take this opportunity to thank all the parents for all their hard work this week. I spoke to the French students during the week and managed to get some really positive and enthusiastic feed back. They had a very good time in England and loved all the activities organised for the week. They were particularly impressed by the kindness and thoughtfulness shown by the English families and were touched by how welcome they were made to feel.
I am delighted to say that the whole exchange was a real success and reminds us again of the overall value of this experience from a language perspective, as well as a social and personal one. It is a unique experience, which enables French pupils to sample English life and culture (and vice versa), to grow in confidence and strengthen their language skills but also helps them to mature. Our children learnt how to cope in a different environment, country and situation and managed to do so with growing confidence and real enthusiasm.
As it was such a success, we are already looking into organising our next exchange with La Perverie and are organising the return trip in the Lent term.
