| Chris, Ben and Brett with Dame Kelly Holmes |
This weekend, Chris H, Brett H and Ben L headed down to Crawley to
compete in the IAPS National Swimming Championships. They had qualified
for this prestigious competition last term and were all keen to do as
well as they could.

After registering at the K2 Leisure Centre, there was a wait for the
warm-up, which was a little later in the day. The boys wandered
outside to the running track and were delighted to see a number of past
sporting heroes: Sir Steve Redgrave, Dame Kelly Holmes, and swimming
stars Sharon Davies and Steve Parry were among others such as Roger
Black, Graham Thorpe, and Euan Thomas - to name just a few! This
swimming competition is prestigious - but frankly was it that
prestigious? However, these past stars were very interested in Malvern
College Prep School's up-and-coming stars, and were very happy to have
their photograph taken with them. It turned out that they were at the
same venue to film "Superstars".

After chatting with the stars, the boys went into their warm-up
encouraged by their meetings. In the 25m butterfly, Brett put in a
personal best time by nearly half a second. Ben was next with his 50m
breaststroke and, he too swam a p.b. by about half a second. Chris had
to wait to the last race of the individual events for his swim. He too
did a p.b., knocking nearly a second off his previous best time. The
wait was now on to see if any had qualified for their final. The wait
wasn't too long and amazingly all three boys finished off in ninth
position - just missing their final by one place! However, knowing that
they had all swum their best there was only a little disappointment.
All three boys were a credit to MCPS and the day was certainly enhanced
by meeting some of this country's best sporting icons of recent years.
In fact, swimming coach Mrs Meriel Davey was quite overcome by the
whole thing! A great day in many ways!
