Boarding: A Highlight of Malvern College Preparatory School Life

We all become part of a massive family, and everyone always looks after each other.

Boarding forms an important part of school life. One third of the boys and girls in Malvern College Prep School board in our two houses, one for boys and one for girls. Cherbourg, the boys’ house, is led by Lesley-Anne Tulley, an experienced housemistress, who is supported by male staff and two matrons. The Headmaster’s wife, Judith Moody spearheads Southlands and she, too, is assisted by two matrons. Nearly all our boarders are full time, with varied activities organised throughout each weekend, but occasional boarders are welcomed, so long as bed space is available.

Senior boarders visit to Compton Verney

Senior boarders spent an enjoyable Sunday afternoon at Compton Verney, during which they saw ancient Chinese terracotta and bronze artefacts, landscape and portrait paintings, an array of folk art objects and also played a 300-year-old game of 1-2-3 in the grand, marble-tiled entrance room to the mansion. Nigel, the guide, was very knowledgeable and brought the collection alive with his stories.

Boarders' weekend activities

Weekends are an important time for rest and relaxation, but also for enjoying a range of stimulating activities. Aside from the weekend trips planned to the Black Mountains and to Cwm Llwch, the boarders’ programme of Sunday activities got under way with a very enjoyable visit to the Llangorse Rope and Riding Centre in the Brecon Beacons. After a thorough briefing by the centre's staff, all the children were kitted out with helmets and harnesses. Working in small groups, each led by an instructor, the children tackled the zip wire, the climbing wall, the horizontal ropes and ladders. Accompanying staff were impressed by the determination shown by the children as they climbed and moved several metres above the floor. (For full details of this term's boarders' weekend activity programme, see Boarding.)
