Lucy Henshall - England call
Apr 10, 2008, 12:00
Lucy started fencing when she was 9 years old and has won a significant number of medals in her five year fencing career to date. She moved to England from Finland and has won international competitions in each country. In Finland she was the top-ranked epeeist of her age group and in England last year she was runner-up in the British Public Schools Mount-Haes girls' epee.
Lucy has fenced regularly for the West Midlands but this is the first time she has been chosen to represent England. 'Challenge Wroclaw' will be attended by hundreds of fencers representing most European countries. Countries like Russia, the Ukraine and Hungary will also be there in force and have dominated world fencing for years so the competition will be tough. A spokesman from England Fencing said "We have been watching Lucy's progress this season and there is no doubt that she shows great potential. We are very pleased to have her as part of our 'Tomorrow's Acheivers' squad for Wroclaw"
Lucy's ambition is to fence in the Olympics. She trains regularly at the College Fencing Club with her coach Lynne Melia who says " Lucy has made great progress in British fencing since moving back to the UK in 2006. This invitation to join the England team is fitting recognition of her effort and achievements and is a great boost for fencing at Malvern College"
