Liliana with Sir Michael Spicer

At the special debating competition held on Friday evening, November 14th 2003, in the elegant surroundings of St Edmund's Hall, Sir Michael Spicer MP singled out one of our Lower Sixth IB pupils, Liliana Worth, for special praise. Liliana, aided by another pupil, chaired the whole evening with great confidence and serenity.

The occasion was the sixth annual Eyres-Monsell Debating Competition for schools in Sir Michael's parliamentary constitiuency - and the second to be held in Malvern College, where debating flourishes. Five schools were represented plus an independent team to make up six teams for three debates. The panel of four adjudicators included Charles Morgan Esq., Managing Director of The Morgan Motor Company and Mr Paul West, Chief Constable of West Mercia. The winning team came from Pershore and the prize for the best individual speaker was awarded to a member of the independent team, Robert Cumming, whose brother is currently President of the Cambridge Union.

On this occasion, therefore, the Malvern College team, James Robertson and Jehaan Mehta, were up against rather formidable opponents. They, nevertheless, acquitted themselves admirably. James Robertson's summing-up speech was especially effective with the large audience. Mr Chappell, i/c Debating at the College, is convinced that James will learn from this experience and go on to win trophies another day.

Another Malvern pupil, John Kirby, became something of a hero when a pupil from the school opposing the College team, was unable to take part ten minutes before she was due to speak. John, to the admiration of all, stepped into the breach so that the debate could go on. Not only did John manage to string together a speech of some force but he also scored several very effective 'points of information' against his fellow College pupils on the other side!
