Chess win for Malvern

Dec 5, 2003, 13:55

An exciting chess match against RGS Worcester recently resulted in a narrow 5 - 4 win for Malvern.

Played over 9 boards. The draw for colour gave Malvern white on the odd-numbered boards. R.G.S. took the lead when Daniel Horke lost material and had to resign. However Heinrich Maywald won his opponent's queen and soon forced mate, as did Jimmy Tao. Meanwhile Alex Scholz had played very steadily to reach a level ending with knight against bishop. Eventually, with a king and just one pawn against a king, his opponent could only force stalemate, leaving Malvern with a 2.5 - 1.5 lead.

The games on the top five boards were adjudicated as R.G.S. had to leave earlier than usual. The remaining material on each board led to the decisions :- two wins to each side and one draw. Hence Malvern finally emerged winners by 5-4, but R.G.S. will be hoping to gain their revenge at Worcester next term.

Malvern team :- Philipp Roser, Sam Tombs, Sean Bottomley, David Ponting, Simon Killam, Heinrich Maywald, Alex Scholz, Daniel Horke, Jimmy Tao.
