The GCSE/IGCSE Years from September 2008
In the Remove (Year 10) pupils study the following subjects.

Compulsory Subjects:

English
(leading to GCSEs in English and English Literature for almost all pupils, except for a few for whom concentrating on GCSE English is more appropriate).

Mathematics

Biology, Chemistry and Physics
leading to “Double Award” Science (or three separate sciences if the “Separate Sciences” option i taken – see below)

French or ‘English as an additional language’

Religious Studies
(Pupils who are in higher English sets will take a GCSE short course at the end of the Remove year if they are reckoned to be capable of good grades. Other pupils take ‘non-specialist’ Religious studies)

Physical Education
leading to an Entry level Certificate in “Physical Education – practical accreditation”. (This subject is also available at GCSE - see the option blocks below).


Optional Subjects
Once again, this year optional subjects chosen for the Remove will be the ones which pupils continue through to GCSE.

The following options are available in the Remove (Year 10) and Hundred (Year 11)

Art and Design, Drama, Geography, German, Greek, History, Italian, Latin, Music, Physical Education GCSE, Separate Sciences (note 1), Spanish, Design Technology

Pupils in the top four Foundation Year Mathematics sets (except any who are in the lowest English set) will be asked to choose FOUR options from this list, with the following criteria (to ensure breadth of study):

• pupils not taking French or English as an additional language should choose a modern or classical language.
• pupils should choose at least ONE of Geography or History
• pupils should choose at least ONE subject from Art and Design, Drama, Music, Physical Education, Technology.

Pupils in the lowest English set or the lowest Mathematics set will be asked to choose any THREE subjects.

In their “spare” block they will have supervised study. Those in the lowest Mathematics set will have two periods of supervised study in Mathematics.

Notes
1. By choosing the “Separate Sciences” option, pupils can extend the core “Double Award” Science to three separate Science GCSEs. Pupils who intend taking two or more science subjects at A level (or two at IB Higher) would be well advised to consider this option.
2. It is not normally possible for a pupil to begin a modern or classical language which they have not studied in the Foundation Year.
3. The blocking of the subjects will be constructed after the initial choices have been made so that as many pupils as possible can study their first choice of optional subjects.


Procedure for choosing Options
Pupils will be asked to make provisional choices just after Half-term in the Lent term, in consultation with their Form Tutor, Parents and Housemaster or Housemistress. Such choices are not irrevocable. They will, however, be used to place the options into blocks. The consultation process continues and by the end of the Summer term it is hoped that most pupils will have made up their minds and chosen their subjects.
